Models of Coaching Supervision

iStock_000005985927XSmallAs a coaching supervisor, one of the things I felt was really important in training as a coach supervisor was the fact I could bring new, specific skills and techniques and models of supervision, as well as my experience as a coach and my life experience to my work with coaches.

So what models of supervision do I use?
Well, having trained with The Coaching Supervision Academy, I use a couple of key models all the time as a coach supervisor when I work.

These become a flexible background to how we work together.

The Full Spectrum Model

I use this informally as a background and always send out a copy to new coaching supervision clients.  As a model of coaching supervision, The Full Spectrum model is a holistic approach.  I like it because it is a good reminder at the start of working together, and throughout the coaching supervision relationship, how broad coaching supervision can be.  How many elements of your work as a coach, and with your clients, you can bring to supervision.

You can find a full description of the Coaching Supervision Academy Full Spectrum Model here.

The 7 Eyed Model of Coaching Supervision

Another key model for coach supervisors to use with their clients to help structure a session.  As when you are a coach, you may use the Grow Model to structure your coaching sessions, the 7 eyed model can form a similar, loose framework for the supervision.

Based on work by Hawkins and Shohet, it helps take the coach out of the immediate coaching session, and take a super-vision of the coaching by looking at different perspectives of the work.

The 7 eyes are:

  1. Bringing the client into the room – all about the particular client and their situation
  2. What strategies the coach is using
  3. The relationship between coach and client
  4. Your experience of the call as the coach
  5. Any parallel process happening on the call
  6. What I notice as the supervisor about everything
  7. The big picture and organisational context to the coaching work

You can find out more about the model on the Coaching Supervision Academy website under the 7 Eyed Model
